Doug Smith
Doug grew up in Southern California, and has considered the ocean his place of serenity for almost his entire life. Born in Los Angeles, he moved to San Diego and attended The University of San Diego where he graduated with a degree in English Literature. After graduating, Doug found himself watching his friends automatically entering the “9 to 5 Corporate”, and promised himself he would never follow suit. He was eventually introduced to a San Diego beach lifeguard who encouraged him to tryout. Thinking it was only going to be temporary, Doug is now a 13-year veteran with the San Diego Lifeguard Service, where he is now part of the Permanent Staff.
In addition to public safety, Doug has also spent the last few years freelancing in ghost writing and copy editing when he is not on duty. He contends that, while lifeguarding is his career and something he loves, writing is his true passion. That being said, Doug admits that writing for Tower Magazine has provided him a creative outlet he has never been able to find at work.

The Five Hour Workday is a book about one company that simply asked why. A company that had the courage to try an experiment, toward re-inventing a more sensible, productive, and healthy workday for the knowledge workers of today.
A company that switched to a five-hour workday, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., and found that it changed everything for the better. As a result, that company — Tower Paddle Boards — is now one of the fastest-growing companies in the nation.
